As our departure date approaches, we’ve spent considerable time researching what to take with us.
The first question is what backpack to choose. We opted for backpacks over suitcases as will be easier when lugging around on buses & trains (or over rugged terrain). We decided to go for carry on size for the same reason. Plus we’re likely to take several flights on budget airlines and don’t want to pay extra for checking in luggage.
I ended up going for the Osprey Fairview 40 (for a more detailed review see my post here)
As this limits the amount I can pack, I also decided to use packing cubes to maximise the efficiency of the space
My full packing list ended up being:
Lightweight day pack. As my Osprey Fairview 40 is only 40L, I wanted one that would fold up small and fit in a pocket or clip onto the outside of my bag, such as this one
Underwear and Socks – I bought some of these bamboo trainer socks as they are very small / lightweight and have good moisture absorption.
4 x casual dresses
1 x maxi dress
1 x going out dress
1 x shorts
2 x t-shirts
1 x lightweight breathable hoodie
1 x lightweight shower-proof jacket (I have a Peter Storm one which I’ve used for years)
Microfibre towel – depending on where you’re staying this may not be necessary, but if you do take a towel would recommend as very small / lightweight and quick drying
1 x pair of sturdy sandals, I wanted some with closed toes and found these Keen ones very comfortable and sturdy
1 x pair flip flops
Toothbrush, toothpaste, travel sized toiletries
Small make-up bag
Hairbrush
Portable battery (for charging mobile phones etc)
Adapter and charging cable for mobile phone
First aid kit
Mosquito repellent – one with high DEET content is most effective, I bought both these roll-on ones (as they were on offer!) and this spray and will update on which was more effective
As I’m not checking in my luggage on any flights, all my toiletries and insect repellent needed to be in 100ml or smaller bottles
